Solving the world’s most pressing healthcare challenges at the intersection of biology and technology is possible when we develop innovations that impact patients’ quality of life and health, ultimately saving lives.
To achieve this, redefining the patient experience must start with access. According to the 2022 National Health and Nutrition Survey,[1] nearly 50% of Mexico’s population has access to highly specialized healthcare services, highlighting the need to drive growth through a new generation of innovative solutions and technologies.
However, accelerating innovation in healthcare requires a disruptive approach: advancing faster in developing less invasive and more personalized technologies to go beyond conventional treatments. In other words, leveraging science and technology to revolutionize healthcare.
The digitalization of healthcare, electronic medical records, artificial intelligence for more accurate diagnoses, and the development of advanced medical devices are just some of the ways technological innovation is enhancing healthcare.
In Mexico, the adoption of electronic medical records has grown significantly. According to the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), 45% of public hospitals already use this technology[2], improving efficiency in care and reducing medical errors. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine grew by 300%, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas, according to the Mexican Internet Association[3].
These advancements not only increase efficiency and accuracy in diagnosing and treating diseases but also enable more personalized, accessible, timely, and cost-effective care for both patients and healthcare providers.
Driving new care models is another key element. Healthcare innovation also involves adopting approaches centered on prevention and health promotion. Primary care, for example, is being redefined through the implementation of comprehensive programs that address medical conditions with multidisciplinary teams. These teams support patients before, during, and after a procedure, improving health outcomes and reducing long-term healthcare costs in Mexico.
At Johnson & Johnson MedTech, our technologies and solutions help create both immediate and lasting impacts by treating complex diseases and restoring health with next-generation minimally invasive surgical devices, orthopedic solutions, and cardiovascular disease treatments, such as for arrhythmia.
We are developing the next generation of smart devices that harness the power of data from the operating room and beyond, to support physicians and drive more predictable surgical outcomes with fewer complications.
Mexico has immense transformative potential in healthcare innovation, and we still have much room for growth to bring cutting-edge technology to more patients.
Innovation is the key to addressing the healthcare sector’s challenges in the 21st century. From medical technology to new care models and scientific advancements, innovation is reshaping how we understand and approach healthcare. Achieving a revolution in healthcare requires a collective effort involving collaboration between different stakeholders: government, educational institutions, businesses, and healthcare professionals. Together, we can foster a culture of change and adaptation, leveraging the power of innovation to build a more efficient, equitable, and patient-centered healthcare system.
